Oh, what could have been for fans of the New York Islanders.
Most National Hockey League fans in the Metropolitan area will know about one of the greatest dynasties to have ever played the game, the 1979-1983 Islanders: New York’s dynasty ended the four-year run of the Montreal Canadiens.
In four finals, which were all won by New York, the Islanders lost only three games, going 12-1 over the final three seasons, to bring home four Stanley Cups to Long Island.
The Islanders went back in 1984, but were finally dethroned by Wayne Gretzky and the last great NHL dynasty.
Between 1984 and 2019, though, the Islanders only went back to one Eastern Conference Finals (1993) and had runs of seven and five years outside of the playoffs.
Then came COVID-19, and the shortened season of 2020: the Islanders made the most of it, and went all the way to the sixth game of the Conference Finals before losing to eventual champions Tampa Bay. New York did it again in 2021, stunning the Penguins and Bruins on the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Islanders lost Game Seven 1-0 to the Lightning, who went on to win a second Stanley Cup in a row.
Oh, how close it has been of late for fans and bettors backing the Islanders: although if you backed the underdog New York in each series of late, you are probably rolling in the dough.
It is for this reason that no team wants to see the Islanders in the postseason: this squad knows how to win when it counts.

The Islanders are always battling to make the playoffs each season, so they will usually be in with a shout to win a conference title. Although New York did not make the postseason in 2022, you do not have to go back very far to see how competitive the Islanders can be: New York went to back-to-back Eastern Conference Finals in 2020 and 2021, losing in six games (2020) and seven games (1-0 in the final game, 2021) to the eventual Stanley Cup champion, the Tampa Bay Lightning. They were “this close” to possibly recreating the dynasty of the early 1980s.
With that in mind, if this team does get into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, you have to take them very seriously as a team that could make some noise. One thing is for sure: higher-seeded teams will want no part of playing the Islanders in a playoff series.
