Can you bet the NFL in New York? What’s allowed and where
The NFL is the biggest betting sport in New York. Every one of the state’s 8 live mobile sportsbooks posts lines on all 272 regular-season games, the playoffs and the Super Bowl.
The basics are the same as anywhere: moneyline, point spread and total, plus props, parlays, futures and live betting. The differences in New York are in the details. Some bets aren’t allowed here, and where you stand when you bet matters.
To bet you must be 21+ and physically inside New York State.
How to read an NFL line
A typical Sunday line looks like this:
| Team | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York Jets | +3 (-110) | +135 | O 41.5 (-110) |
| Buffalo Bills | -3 (-110) | -155 | U 41.5 (-110) |
- Spread: the Bills must win by 4 or more to cover. A 3-point Bills win is a push. The Jets cover if they win or lose by 1 or 2.
- Moneyline: $155 on Buffalo wins $100. $100 on the Jets wins $135.
- Total: bet whether both teams combine for 42 or more (over) or 41 or fewer (under).

Key numbers 3 and 7: the most important idea in football wagering
Football scores come in field goals (3) and touchdowns (7, with the extra point). So final margins cluster.
According to Covers, about 15% of NFL games land on a 3-point margin and about 9% on 7. No other numbers come close.
That makes half a point around 3 and 7 worth far more than half a point anywhere else.
Worked example: Giants +2.5 vs. +3
Say one book has the Giants +2.5 (-110) and another has Giants +3 (-120).
- Giants lose by 3: at +2.5 you lose. At +3 you push and get your stake back.
- Everything else grades the same.
You pay an extra 10 cents (risking $120 instead of $110 to win $100) to turn the single most common NFL result from a loss into a refund. In most cases that is a price worth paying around 3. Around 5 or 6, the same half point is worth much less.
Teasers through 3 and 7
A 6-point teaser moves two or more spreads 6 points in your favor. The classic NFL use is to move a line through both key numbers:
- Giants +1.5 becomes Giants +7.5
- Bills -7.5 becomes Bills -1.5
Both legs must win. If your book prices a two-team, 6-point teaser at -120, you risk $120 to win $100. Teasers that don’t cross 3 and 7 give you points in the wrong places.
Betting the Giants, Jets and Bills
New York has three NFL teams, and each comes with a betting quirk.
Giants and Jets: the New Jersey problem
The Giants and Jets play their home games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Your NY sportsbook account only takes bets while you are physically in New York.
At MetLife your phone geolocates you in New Jersey. Bets there fall under New Jersey’s market, if your sportsbook operates in NJ and you are set up there. Place your NY bets before you cross the river.
Local-team markets are also where public money concentrates. Lines on New York teams can carry a premium when fans pile in, which is a reason to shop prices.
Bills: a new stadium and the weather factor
The Bills moved into the new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park in 2026. It is still an open-air stadium in Western New York.
Wind is the weather factor that moves NFL totals most. A gusty December game in Orchard Park can drop a total several points from its opening number. Check the forecast before you bet a late-season Bills over.
SNF, MNF and TNF: wagering on prime-time football
Three national windows get the biggest single-game handle of the week:
| Window | Broadcaster | Day |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday Night Football (TNF) | Amazon Prime Video | Thursday |
| Sunday Night Football (SNF) | NBC and Peacock | Sunday |
| Monday Night Football (MNF) | ESPN and ABC | Monday |
Prime-time games are standalone, so every book focuses its menu on one game. Expect the widest range of player props, same game parlays and live markets of the week.
Three things to watch:
- Short weeks. Teams playing Thursday after a Sunday game get three days to prepare. Injury reports matter more.
- Lines move all week. SNF and MNF lines open early and absorb a week of news and money. Betting early can catch a better number, and so can waiting. Track the line before you commit.
- Same game parlays are priced for correlation. A Bills win plus a Josh Allen passing over is linked, and the book prices it that way. Our parlay betting guide explains why.
NFL props: what NY books offer and what they don’t
Player props are the fastest-growing NFL market. Common lines include passing yards, rushing yards, receptions and anytime touchdown scorer.
Worked example: a Giants receiver is over 64.5 receiving yards at -115. A $57.50 bet wins $50 if he gets 65 or more.
New York is stricter than most states:
- No award futures. You can’t bet NFL MVP, Offensive Player of the Year or Rookie of the Year at NY sportsbooks, as Legal Sports Report has reported. Bill S2616 would allow them, but it has not passed.
- No college player props, and no bets at all on games involving New York college teams.
- Prop rules under review. The State Gaming Commission began re-examining game-specific player props in November 2025.

Super Bowl betting for New Yorkers
The Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 29-13 in Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, at Levi’s Stadium. Super Bowl LXI is set for SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in February 2027.
Futures: you can bet on the Super Bowl winner, conference winners, division winners and team win totals all season. A team at +1200 pays $1,200 on a $100 bet. Futures tie up your money for months, so shop the price.
Game lines and props: the Super Bowl gets the deepest prop menu of the year. NY bettors get player and team props, but not Super Bowl MVP, the coin toss or novelty props such as Gatorade color. The State Gaming Commission approves every market, and it has said wagers that are not part of the game or based on official statistics will not be approved.
Three habits that make you a sharper NFL bettor
- Get the best number. Accounts at two or three NY books let you take +3 instead of +2.5.
- Read injury reports. Official reports drop Wednesday to Friday, and Sunday inactives come out about 90 minutes before kickoff.
- Bet with your head, not your jersey. A Giants fan betting the Giants every week pays the local premium every week.

NFL betting FAQ
Can you bet on the NFL in New York?
Yes. All 8 live licensed NY mobile sportsbooks offer NFL betting to people who are 21+ and physically in New York.
Why are 3 and 7 key numbers in NFL betting?
Field goals are worth 3 points and touchdowns with the extra point are worth 7, so final margins cluster on those numbers. About 15% of games end with a 3-point margin and about 9% with 7, according to Covers.
Can I bet on NFL MVP in New York?
No. NY sportsbooks do not offer award futures such as MVP or Rookie of the Year. A bill to allow them has not passed.
Can I bet on Giants and Jets games at MetLife Stadium?
MetLife Stadium is in New Jersey, so your NY account won’t take bets there. You need to be physically in New York to bet through a NY sportsbook.
What channel is Monday Night Football on?
MNF airs on ESPN and ABC. Sunday Night Football is on NBC and Peacock, and Thursday Night Football streams on Amazon Prime Video.
What happens to an NFL bet if the game ends in a tie?
Spread and total bets are graded on the final score, including overtime. A 2-way moneyline on a tied regular-season game is usually graded as a push and refunded.
