NBA wagering in New York: the champions’ city
The Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the 2026 NBA Finals, closing it out with a 94-90 win in Game 5 for their first title since 1973. Along the way they beat Atlanta 4-2, then swept Philadelphia and Cleveland.
Across the river, the Nets missed the playoffs for a third straight season.
That makes New York a two-speed NBA betting market: a defending champion that public money loves, and a rebuilding team that often comes with points. Both are bettable at all 8 live NY mobile sportsbooks, as long as you are 21+ and physically in New York.
How to read NBA odds and lines
A standard NBA line has three bets side by side:
| Team | Spread | Moneyline | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brooklyn Nets | +8.5 (-110) | +290 | O 222.5 (-110) |
| New York Knicks | -8.5 (-110) | -360 | U 222.5 (-110) |
Read it row by row:
- Spread: the Knicks must win by 9 or more. The Nets cover if they win or lose by 8 or fewer.
- Moneyline: $360 on the Knicks wins $100. $100 on the Nets wins $290.
- Total: over wins at 223 or more combined points, under at 222 or fewer.
The number in brackets is the price. At -110 you risk $110 to win $100, so you need to win 52.38% of bets to break even.
The home team is usually listed second.
NBA moneylines: picking the winner straight up
The moneyline is a straight bet on the winner, overtime included.
Minus odds show what you risk to win $100. Plus odds show what $100 wins. At -360, a $36 bet on the Knicks wins $10. At +290, a $36 bet on the Nets wins $104.40.
Convert any price to implied probability to judge it:
- -360: 360 ÷ 460 = 78.3%
- +290: 100 ÷ 390 = 25.6%
The two add up to 103.9%. The extra 3.9% is the book’s margin. Our moneyline betting guide has a full probability table.
What does -1450 mean in NBA betting?
-1450 means you risk $1,450 to win $100. Put another way, a $100 bet wins just $6.90.
The implied probability is 1450 ÷ 1550 = 93.5%. You would need to be right more than 93 times in 100 to break even.
Prices this short are rare for a single NBA game. They show up most often on playoff series prices, such as a 1-seed against an 8-seed, or on a heavy favorite once a series lead is big. A team 3-0 up in a best-of-seven, for instance, can be priced in that range to win the series.
Short prices are not “safe” bets. One loss at -1450 wipes out the profit from about 14 wins.
How basketball spread betting works
The spread handicaps the favorite so both sides are roughly even. NBA spreads move in half points and can run from pick’em to double digits.
Worked example: Knicks -4.5 at Atlanta
- Knicks win by 5 or more: Knicks bettors win. A $110 bet returns $210.
- Knicks win by 1 to 4, or lose: Hawks +4.5 bettors win.
Whole-number spreads can push. If the line is Knicks -4 and they win by exactly 4, every stake is refunded.
First-half and quarter spreads
Books post spreads for each half and quarter. The first-half line is usually a little more than half the full-game spread. These bets settle on that segment only, so a fourth-quarter collapse can’t touch a first-half winner.
For more, including alternate spreads and buying points, see our point spread betting guide.
Reading an NBA total: what 224 O/U means
“224 O/U” means the book’s total is 224 points. You bet whether both teams combine for more (over) or fewer (under).
| Game | Over | Under |
|---|---|---|
| Magic vs. Heat, 224 | -105 | -115 |
The shorter price on the under (-115) means the book rates it slightly more likely, or has taken more money on it.
- Heat win 111-103 (214): the under wins. A $115 bet returns $215.
- Heat win 118-110 (228): the over wins. A $105 bet returns $205.
- Heat win 114-110 (224): the total lands exactly on 224. Push, stakes refunded.
Team totals, quarter totals and player point totals work the same way. More in our totals betting guide.
Does overtime count? NBA bets and extra periods
NBA overtime is a 5-minute period, repeated until there is a winner. For betting, the rule is simple:
Standard NBA bets include overtime. Moneyline, full-game spread and full-game total all settle on the final score after any overtime.
Overtime example: Knicks vs. Nets goes to OT
You bet the Knicks moneyline and the under 216.5. Regulation ends 104-104, or 208 points.
- The moneyline is still live. If the Knicks win in overtime, you win.
- The under is in trouble. Two teams scoring at their regulation pace for 5 more minutes will likely push the total past 216.5. Overtime points count.
Overtime helps over bettors and hurts unders. It can also flip a spread, because teams often stretch the margin in a 5-minute session.
If you want overtime out of the picture, bet a regulation-only market.
Regulation 3-way lines in the NBA
A regulation 3-way bet settles on the score after 48 minutes and adds a third outcome: the tie.
| Outcome | Example price |
|---|---|
| Knicks win in regulation | -160 |
| Tie after 48 minutes | +1200 |
| Nets win in regulation | +300 |
Back the Knicks here and an overtime win counts as a loss, because regulation ended tied. Back the tie at +1200 and a $10 bet wins $120 if the game goes to overtime, whoever wins it.
Why bet it? The favorite is usually a bit longer than on the 2-way moneyline, so you get a better price if you expect a regulation win. The tie is a long shot that can make sense between two evenly matched teams.
Double result bets in basketball: what they mean
A double result bet, also called halftime/full-time, asks you to pick the leader at halftime and the winner at full time in one bet.
With two teams there are four main outcomes: Knicks/Knicks, Knicks/Nets, Nets/Knicks and Nets/Nets. Some books add a tie at halftime as a fifth option.
Worked example: you expect the Nets to start fast at Barclays Center but the Knicks to win. Nets/Knicks might be +450. A $20 bet wins $90 if Brooklyn leads at the half and the Knicks win the game.
Because you need two things to go right, double result pays more than a plain moneyline. It also loses more often. It works best when you have a specific view on how a game will unfold, such as a team that habitually starts slow.
NBA referee betting: what it really means
Sportsbooks don’t take bets on referees. “Referee betting” means using officiating tendencies as one input for other bets, mostly totals.
Every crew calls a game differently. Some referees call more fouls, which means more free throws, more stoppages and more points from the line. Others let teams play.
The NBA announces referee assignments on game day. Bettors who track crew data look at:
- Fouls and free-throw attempts per game with that crew
- Over/under record of games the crew has worked
- Home/away foul split
Treat referee data as a tiebreaker, not a system. Crew records are noisy, and books already price some of this in.
NBA player props
Player props are a big part of NBA betting in New York: points, rebounds, assists, threes and combinations such as points + rebounds + assists.
A line might read Jalen Brunson over 27.5 points at -115. $115 wins $100 if he scores 28 or more.
NY rules matter here. College player props are banned, and the State Gaming Commission began re-examining game-specific player props in November 2025. Pro NBA props remain available. See our props betting guide.
Building a basketball model and calculating ROI
You don’t need code to bet with a model. You need a repeatable way to produce your own number and compare it with the book’s.
A simple NBA model in four steps
- Rate each team. Use net rating (points scored minus allowed per 100 possessions) as a base, from a public stats source.
- Adjust for context. Injuries and rest move NBA lines more than in any other sport. A star sitting out a back-to-back can be worth several points.
- Project a margin and a total. Compare your projection with the posted spread and total.
- Bet only real gaps. If your number and the book’s are a point apart, pass. Margin of error eats small edges.
Then track whether the line moves toward your number before tip-off. Consistently beating the closing line is the best early sign that your model works.
Calculating ROI on NBA bets
ROI is profit divided by the total amount staked, not by the number of bets.
Worked example: you place 200 spread bets of $110 each at -110, so you stake $22,000 in total.
| Win rate | Wins | Profit/loss | ROI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50% | 100 | -$1,000 | -4.5% |
| 52.38% | 105 | about $0 | 0% |
| 55% | 110 | +$1,100 | +5.0% |
At 55% you win 110 bets for $11,000 and lose 90 for $9,900. Your profit is $1,100 on $22,000 staked, a 5% ROI. A sustained 55% against the spread is a very good result for any bettor.
Bankroll and units
Bet in units, a fixed share of your bankroll. Many bettors use 1% to 2% per bet. With a $1,000 bankroll, that is $10 to $20 per bet, which lets you survive the losing runs every bettor has.
Live NBA wagering in the Empire State
NBA games are built for live betting: about 100 possessions per team, runs of 10-0 and constant price changes.
Popular live markets include the live spread and total, quarter lines, race to 20 points and live player props. Prices lock briefly during free throws and reviews.
Worked example: the Knicks were -4.5 pregame but trail by 10 at halftime. The live spread might now be Knicks +2.5. If you still rate them the better team, you can back them at a price you couldn’t get before tip-off.
In-play bets are authorized under New York’s sports wagering law. Cash out and hedging are covered in our live betting guide.

NBA betting FAQ
How do you read NBA betting lines?
Each line shows a spread, a moneyline and a total. Minus numbers mark the favorite, plus numbers the underdog, and the price in brackets shows what you risk to win $100.
Does overtime count in NBA bets?
Yes. Moneyline, full-game spread and full-game total bets include overtime. Only regulation-only markets, such as 3-way lines, exclude it.
What does -1450 mean in NBA betting?
You risk $1,450 to win $100. The implied win probability is about 93.5%, so a $100 bet wins only $6.90.
What is a 3-way bet in the NBA?
A 3-way bet settles on the score after regulation and includes a tie as a third outcome. An overtime win counts as a tie, not a win.
What does double result mean in basketball betting?
It is a single bet on which team leads at halftime and which team wins the game. You need both parts right to win.
Can you bet on the Knicks in New York?
Yes. Bets on the Knicks and Nets are available at all 8 live licensed NY mobile sportsbooks for bettors who are 21+ and physically in New York.
How do you calculate ROI in sports betting?
Divide your total profit by your total amount staked. A $1,100 profit on $22,000 staked is a 5% ROI.
