✨ Update April 28, 2026

NYC’s First Full Casino Has Officially Opened in Queens

Resorts World New York City cut the ribbon on the city’s first full-scale commercial casino on April 28, 2026, expanding its South Ozone Park property at Aqueduct Racetrack with more than 200 live table games — including blackjack, craps, baccarat and roulette — alongside its existing slots floor.

Resorts World is one of three operators selected for the long-awaited downstate casino licenses. The state projects the three new venues could generate up to $7 billion in gaming tax revenue over the next decade. This expansion is land-based only — it does not legalize online casino play in New York.

NY Online Casino FAQs

Common questions about iGaming legalization in New York

NY online casino legal status illustration
Is online casino gambling legal in New York?
No, online casino gambling (iGaming) is currently illegal in New York. This includes online slots, table games, and poker for real money. The only legal options are in-person casinos and sweepstakes casinos that use a virtual currency model.
When will online casinos be legal in NY?
The earliest realistic timeline is late 2027, if legislation passes during the 2026 session. Senator Joseph Addabbo has championed iGaming bills, but they’ve faced opposition from existing casino operators and concerns about gambling addiction.
Can I use sweepstakes casinos in New York?
As of December 2025, sweepstakes casinos are banned in New York. The state passed legislation prohibiting these platforms, which previously operated in a legal gray area using virtual currency models.
What gambling is legal in New York?
Legal gambling in NY includes: mobile sports betting (8 licensed apps), in-person casinos, horse racing betting, the state lottery, and daily fantasy sports (salary-cap contests only). Online poker and online casino games remain illegal.
Which real-money online casino apps could launch in New York if iGaming is legalized?
If New York legalizes iGaming, the most likely operators to launch real-money online casino apps are the brands already licensed for NY mobile sports betting and active in neighboring iGaming states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Expect BetMGM Casino, DraftKings Casino, FanDuel Casino, Caesars Palace Online Casino, BetRivers Casino, bet365 Casino and Fanatics Casino to be first in line, likely tethered to the state’s existing commercial casino licensees (Resorts World, MGM Empire City, etc.). None of these casino apps are legal in NY today — only their sportsbook products are.
Has a full casino actually opened in New York City?
Yes. On April 28, 2026, Resorts World New York City in South Ozone Park, Queens, officially opened the city’s first full-scale commercial casino with live table games including blackjack, craps, baccarat and roulette. It is one of three operators awarded a downstate casino license. Two more NYC-area casinos are expected to follow.
Does the new NYC casino mean online casinos are now legal?
No. The Resorts World NYC expansion is land-based only. Real-money online slots, table games and poker remain illegal in New York and would require separate iGaming legislation (such as Senate Bill S2614) to pass before any online casino app could launch.
How much tax revenue could online casinos generate for New York?
Industry estimates suggest legal iGaming could generate $1 billion or more in annual tax revenue for New York at the proposed 51% tax rate — comparable to mobile sports betting. This budget potential is the strongest argument supporters use to push lawmakers toward passing legislation in the 2026 or 2027 session.
