Live betting in New York: how in-play odds move and how to bet them

Live odds can shift a dozen times in a single NFL drive. Here is how in-play betting works, what cash out is really worth and where New Yorkers can bet live.

By Alexander KostinUpdated

What is live betting? Odds that move with every play

Live betting, also called in-play or in-game betting, means placing bets after a game has started. The sportsbook updates its odds in real time as the score, clock and momentum change.

You can bet the same core markets as before kickoff, including moneyline, spread and total, plus fast markets that only exist live, such as next scoring play or result of the current drive.

In New York, in-play wagers are expressly listed as an authorized bet type under the state’s sports wagering law. Bill A9343 would remove them, but it has not been enacted.

How live odds move: a worked example

Pregame, the Knicks are +150 at Boston and the total is 224.5.

At halftime the Knicks lead by 12. A live line might now read:

MarketPregameHalftime (live)
Knicks moneyline+150-300
Celtics moneyline-175+250
Game total224.5219.5

The Knicks have gone from a 40% underdog to a 75% favorite. The total has dropped because the first half came in slow.

Every live price is the book’s estimate of what happens next, given what has happened so far. That estimate changes after every basket.

Bet delays and odds changes: why your bet gets rejected

Live markets suspend whenever something big is about to happen, such as a free kick, a red zone snap or a penalty shot. You will see the price lock or disappear.

When you hit “place bet”, most books hold the request for a few seconds to check that the price is still valid. If it has moved, the app asks you to accept the new odds or cancels the bet.

Most NY apps let you set a preference: accept any odds change, accept only better odds, or always ask. If you bet live often, “only better odds” protects you from being filled at a worse price.

Cash out: what your open bet is really worth

Cash out lets you settle a bet early for a set amount. The book offers you a price based on the live odds, minus a margin.

Back to the Knicks. You bet $100 at +150 pregame, so a win returns $250.

At halftime the Knicks are -300, a 75% chance by the book’s numbers. A fair value for your ticket would be 75% × $250 = $187.50. The book’s cash-out offer will usually be lower, say around $175. The gap is the cost of certainty.

Cash out makes sense when your view of the game has changed. It is a poor habit when it is just nerves, because the margin adds up over time. Some books also offer partial cash out, letting you settle part of a bet and leave the rest running.

Hedging live: lock in a profit with math

Hedging means betting the other side to guarantee a result. It often beats a cash-out offer, because you get the full live price.

At halftime, the Celtics are +250. How much should you bet on Boston to lock in the same profit either way?

  • If the Knicks win: $150 profit minus the hedge stake.
  • If the Celtics win: 2.5 × the hedge stake, minus your original $100.

Set them equal: 150 – H = 2.5H – 100, so H = $71.43.

Bet $71.43 on Boston at +250 and you profit $78.57 whatever happens. Compare that with the cash-out offer before you decide.

In-play markets by sport: what you can bet mid-game

NFL: next scoring play, drive result, live spread and total after every possession. Prices freeze on each snap, and between plays is your window.

NBA: quarter lines, race to points, live player props. Runs of 10-0 swing prices fast, so prices reset all game long. Our NBA betting guide covers live NBA markets in detail.

NHL: next goal, period totals, live puck line. Goalie pulls late in the third create some of the biggest price swings in sports.

MLB: next inning runs, at-bat results, live run line. The break between half-innings is the calmest time to bet.

UFC and tennis: round-by-round and set-by-set betting, with odds refreshed between rounds and games.

Four in-game betting rules for New York bettors

  • Have a plan before the game. Decide what would make you bet live, such as a key injury or a slow start by a strong offense.
  • Watch the game, not just the app. Data feeds lag. A live picture lets you judge what the numbers can’t, such as an injured quarterback in the medical tent.
  • Respect the margin. Live markets usually carry a bigger book margin than pregame lines. Avoid betting every swing.
  • Set limits in advance. Fast markets make it easy to chase. Deposit and time limits are on every NY app. See our responsible gambling page.

Live betting FAQ

What is live betting?

Live betting means placing bets after an event has started. The odds update in real time based on the score, time remaining and other game events.

Is live betting legal in New York?

Yes. In-play bets are an authorized wager type under New York’s sports wagering law. A bill to remove them, A9343, has not been enacted.

Why was my live bet rejected?

Live prices change quickly. If the odds moved or the market suspended while your bet was being checked, the book will reject it or ask you to accept the new price.

How is cash out calculated?

Books base the offer on the current live odds of your bet winning, then subtract a margin. That is why cash-out offers are usually below the fair value of the ticket.

Is it better to hedge or cash out?

Hedging often locks in more, because you bet at the full live price. Do the math for both before choosing. Hedging requires a second bet and enough balance to place it.

Can I bet live on college games in NY?

Only on games that don’t involve a New York college team, and never on college player props. Bets on NY college teams are prohibited whether they are pregame or live.
