The St. Regis Mohawk casino on the border

The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort (AMCR) is owned by Mohawk Gaming Enterprises, a subsidiary of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe. The tribe is one of three in New York with a Class III gaming compact, according to the NY State Gaming Commission; the others are the Seneca Nation and the Oneida Indian Nation. Our NY gambling laws guide explains how tribal casinos fit alongside commercial ones.

The casino opened in 1999 in Hogansburg, on Route 37 in the far north of the state. Akwesasne territory straddles the U.S.–Canada border, and most AMCR guests come from Canada, according to Casino.org.

The casino lists more than 1,200 slot machines, from penny games to high-limit, along with blackjack, craps, roulette and carnival games such as Three Card Poker and Mississippi Stud. The minimum age is 18, with valid photo ID.

Play earns points on the Winners Club card. Points can go toward slot play, hotel stays, dining and gas vouchers. “Fill Up Your Tank Tuesdays,” for example, swap 50 points for a $10 gas voucher.

Sticks Sports Book & Grill: Akwesasne’s betting counter

Sticks is a sports bar and sportsbook in one, with a 9-by-13-foot HD video wall and eighteen 65-inch TVs, according to the casino. Bets go through cashiers and “Sportsbook Writer” terminals or at self-service kiosks.

The key numbers:

  • Minimum bet: $5 at a kiosk or cashier
  • Payment: cash, chips and validated winning tickets
  • Parlays: up to 12 legs pre-game
  • Markets: moneylines, spreads, totals, player props, futures, teasers, round robins, three-way moneylines and in-play bets
  • Age: 18

The grill serves food 11 a.m.–11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and until midnight Friday and Saturday. New York college teams are off the board under state law.

Phones down: FanDuel and DraftKings are blocked at AMCR

Akwesasne is tribal land. The sponsor memo for Senate bill S10470 states that licensed mobile platforms geofence “tribal jurisdictions,” so don’t expect FanDuel or DraftKings to accept a bet inside the casino. Bet at Sticks instead. Elsewhere in New York, the licensed apps take bets from anyone 21+ who is physically in the state; see our best NY sportsbooks. Canadian visitors can’t use their Ontario apps here either, because those only work in Ontario.

Where to stay at Akwesasne: AMCR Hotel, Player’s Inn and an RV park

  • AMCR Hotel: a seven-story, 150-room hotel that opened in May 2013 at a cost of $74 million, according to Casino.org. It has an indoor pool and hot tub, a fitness center, and complimentary valet and bell service. The hotel is 100% smoke-free, and there’s a $12 nightly resort fee.
  • Player’s Inn: the former Comfort Inn next door, with 101 rooms, which AMCR bought in December 2023. It has an indoor pool and includes breakfast.
  • RV Park: for guests traveling with their own rig.

Check-in is 4 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m.
