Both Caesars and Wynn Resorts (WynnBET), two of the bigger players in both retail and online casino gambling in North America, are eyeing up plans to open retail casinos in New York City.
In October, Caesars revealed a proposal for a Times Square casino. It would be situated not far from the area where the traditional ball drop takes place every New Year’s Eve. Meanwhile, Wynn Resorts wants to construct a casino in upscale Hudson Yards on the far west side of Manhattan and not far from the Javits Center.
Retail Casinos in New York City?
Both Caesars sportsbook and WynnBET already are operating online sports betting sites in New York state. Both will certainly want to be part of any online casino gambling in the Empire State. By locating retail casinos in the heart of the Big Apple, that would certainly appear to give them a leg up in the bidding process for online casino licenses.
Steven Cohen, owner of the MLB New York Mets, is combining with the Hard Rock to put forth a casino proposal that would be located next to Citi Field, the Mets’ home stadium in Willets Point in Queens. Real estate developer Joseph Sitt is putting forth a casino proposal for Coney Island.
Resorts World New York City in Queens, and MGM Resorts International’s Empire City Casino in Yonkers
The area’s two racinos are also expected to be in the bidding to expand their casino operations. There’s Genting Group’s Resorts World New York City in Queens, and MGM Resorts International’s Empire City Casino in Yonkers, N.Y. With their infrastructure already in place, both of these locations would have an expanded casino setup up and operational much more quickly than building an entirely new facility.
Applications for three available downstate retail casino licenses – an area that encompasses New York City, Westchester Country and Long Island – open with the state’s Gaming Facility Location Board on Jan. 6, 2023.
State officials are expecting that the licensing process won’t be completed until late in 2023 at the very earliest.
