An international golf competition that began in 1927, the Ryder Cup pits a team of USA golfers against an all-star outfit from Europe. The event is held every two years.

The U.S. team is composed of the top six American players in the points rankings, as well as with six captain’s picks.

The European Team starts with the top three eligible players from the European Points List, and the top three eligible players from the World Points List. Then there are six captain’s picks added.

The USA is 27-14-2 in Ryder Cup competition. Great Britain/Ireland went 3-18-1, which was why the decision to expand to Europe was made. European teams are 11-9-1 in the Ryder Cup.

Betting options on the Ryder Cup include a future book wager on which team will capture the Cup. In the competition, there are betting lines offered on every match.

New York’s Ryder Cup Legacy

The East Course at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester played host to the 1995 Ryder Cup. The USA edged Europe 14.5-13.5.

Walter Hagen of Rochester, an 11-time major winner, served as the USA team captain in each of the first six Ryder Cups between 1927-37. His teams went 4-2 in the competition. Fellow New Yorkers Gene Sarazen and Johnny Farrell joined him on the first USA Ryder Cup-winning squad in 1927. The trio combined for another Ryder Cup win in 1931. Sarazen and Hagen won again in 1935. Tony Manero joined Hagen and Sarazen on the 1937 championship squad. Jim Turnesa of New York City (1953) and Marty Furgol of New York Mills (1955) were Ryder Cup winners.

Ryder Cup Facts

There are three types of matches played in the Ryder Cup.

In four-ball, a pair of two-man teams compete. Each plays their own ball, using the low score on each hole. The team with the player who scores lowest on the hole wins that hole. If two players on opposing teams tie for the low score, then the hole is halved.

In foursomes, each two-man team plays one ball per hole with the players taking alternating shots until each hole is completed. Players also alternate hitting tee shots, with one leading off on odd-numbered holes, and the other hitting first on even-numbered holes. The team with the low score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, the hole is halved.

Singles matches feature one player from each team. The player with the lower score on each hole wins that hole. If scores are tied, the hole is halved.

Each win is worth one point. A drawn match sees each team getting half a point. The team with the most points at the conclusion of the matches wins the Ryder Cup.
